SEMIOTICS FOR EDUCATION: TRANSFORMING THEORIES AND PRACTICES

Chairs: Prof Andrew Stables (Bath, U.K.), Dr Eetu Pikkarainen (Oulu, Finland)

Seminar held as part of
28th International Summer School for Semiotic and Structural Studies
in Imatra, Finland, June 8–12, 2013:

Although education is generally considered in terms of meaning making by students and of the negotiation of meaning between students and teachers, the educational community has been slow to recognise the potential of semiotics to explain and develop the teaching-learning process.

In particular, the potential of engagement with semiotic theory and philosophy (including Peirce, Greimas, Deleuze) has been drastically underexploited.

The International Network for Semiotics and Education, involving the proposers of this symposium, has attempted to address this by bringing together scholars from around the world at a series of invited seminars. The ISI Summer School offers a unique opportunity to develop this work further, through papers drawing on semiotics with respect to any significant aspect of education, including learning, meaning-making and the student experience; teacher education; curriculum; didactics, and educational policy. The point of view of the presentations can vary from philosophical to empirical; and from applying semiotics in education to applying education in semiotics.
