The 1999 ETEN Conference

The conference focuses on the challenges of teacher education in the coming era. Particularly, it is concerned with the nature and quality of teacher education in the international, multicultural and technological world. Among the questions raised in the conference are: How should teacher education react to the changes in society? What are powerful learning environments for teacher education like in the present day world? On which values and epistemological beliefs are they based?

The conference programme will comprise of keynote lectures given by distinguished researchers and teacher educators. The workshop presentations will be grouped under four main headings and organised as poster and paper presentations. The workshops will focus on the thematic interests of the ETEN institutions and also introduce some special learning environments designed for teacher education at the University of Oulu.

Workshop A discusses issues related to intercultural teacher education and comparative education. Workshop B deals with early childhood and primary teacher education with a focus on special needs. Workshop C considers aspects of educational technology and environmental education. Workshop D concentrates on partnerships for co-operative education. Workshops give opportunities for joint discussions which will hopefully generate new ideas and developments in the field. These will be summarised in a joint workshop report session to which all conference participants are invited. Those who intend to submit a proposal to be presented at the workshop, please follow the instructions given in the ETEN99 proposals paper attached to this conference information package. Deadline for submitting workshop presentations is March 31, 1999.
